give someone the ax. 將某人裁員

ax 是「斧頭」，也拼做axe 。give someone the ax就是「把某人一刀砍除」，也就是讓他沒頭路。同樣的，someone/something get the ax表示「某人遭到裁員」或「某事物遭到裁撤」，而be given the axe就是人或物「被開除，被終止」。

Freddie:　Morning, Ron. Do you have time for that checker game?
Ron:　Do you see any customers? I'll get the board out. How's your 1)job hunt coming along?
Freddie:　Could be worse. Our neighbors are losing their house.
Ron:　You mean that young couple? Didn't they just move in a few years ago?
Freddie:　Yep. They bought their house when the market was up.
Ron:　And now that it's 2)bottomed out, they're out of luck.
Freddie:　You got that right. The house is already in *foreclosure.
Ron:　Same thing's happening all across the country. It's a national crisis.
Foreign Debt
Freddie:　The banks don't know what to do with all these houses in foreclosure.
Ron:　I guess I'm lucky. I've paid off my home. Now I have a nest egg.
Freddie:　It's hard for these young people, losing their homes with all that debt.
Ron:　The banks had given / gave out too many home 3)loans. Now we're all in this 4)mess.
Freddie:　Sure enough—that mess has spread through the whole economy.

棋局
費迪：早安，阿朗。有空下一盤棋嗎？
阿朗：你有看到半個客人嗎？我去拿棋盤。找工作找得如何？
費迪：還算可以。我鄰居就要失去他們的房子。
阿朗：你是說那對年輕夫妻？他們不是才搬來幾年？
費迪：是，他們在房價高漲時買的房子。
阿朗：現在房價跌到谷底，他們就倒楣了。
費迪：你說得對，現在房子已成了法拍屋。
阿朗：相同的事在全國各地都有，這是全國的危機。
外國負債
費迪：銀行不知該如何處理這麼多法拍屋。
阿朗：我想自己運氣好，房貸已經付完，這算是我的一筆資產了。
費迪：那些年輕人很辛苦，房子沒了還得負債。
阿朗：銀行核准太多房屋貸款，現在連我們都捲進這一團混亂中。
費迪：的確，那團混亂已經擴散到整個經濟。
