The bird with the long beak is the national symbol of New Zealand.

A Maori legend tells the story of how the
kiwi came to live below the trees, not in the branches like the other birds in New Zealand. Tanehokahoka, The King of the Sky, and his brother had noticed that their forests were _(1)_ because worms,
beetles, and bugs were eating through the roots of all the trees. One day, they gathered all of the birds together to ask who wanted to _(2)_ to go down to the darkness of the forest floor and save the trees.
The birds shook their heads when they were asked to leave their families and told the King of the Sky that they had just built new
nests, so they didn't want to go to the cold ground. _(3)_, the small kiwi bird told the King of the Sky that
enduring the frigid weather to rescue the forest would be a pleasure. From that day on, the Maori
promised to make the kiwi the most
respected bird in all of New Zealand to honor its _(4)_.
Scientists have just proven that New Zealand's national bird, the kiwi, is a _(5)_
relative to another
flightless bird, the
ostrich. All species of kiwi are
endangered and
nocturnal, but in areas _(6)_ all
predators have been removed, kiwis
venture out during the day. New Zealanders have _(7)_ their promise to
hold the kiwi
in high esteem—so much so that New Zealanders both
at home and abroad are called Kiwis. Even the New Zealand dollar is
nicknamed "the kiwi," and the country's most famous fruit is the kiwi.
